U-report outreach activities in Secondary Schools, Universities & Colleges

In the wake of the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, The Zambia U-report team still planned and conducted awareness and sensitization activities in primary and secondary schools where they interacted with the pupils.  We have had the pleasure of visiting young people across four provinces: Central, Eastern, Lusaka, and Southern Province.

The pandemic necessitated a rise in substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, unsafe sexual practices, and mental health disorders caused by uncertainty. The shift in focus from issues like SRHR, Mental Health, Alcohol and Substance Abuse to Covid-19 and limited physical interaction made it difficult for adolescents and young people to access readily available information and services. Although there have been several challenges, the pandemic accelerated the use and acceptance of digital technology.

From 2021 to date, the Zambia U-report team has been conducting mobilization and awareness campaigns across different schools and universities.

As Zambia U-report, we believe that access to quality information is essential if we want to move forward as a society and country. The quality of information we share on our U-report platforms has a significant impact on young people's processes and decision-making, this is because good quality information that is accurate, valid, or reliable can lead to better decisions among youths.

Young people need quality information which is a vital tool for their development because it helps them make informed and responsible decisions.

Using a platform where they can have quick and easy access to clear information is critical in enabling them to gain knowledge on many issues that affect them directly and indirectly. It will help them have a broad understanding of these many issues.

This is because every young person needs to be aware and have access to a platform where they can speak out, get reliable and detailed information, and share their views on issues they care about. As u-report, we believe that access to information is critical for enabling youth to exercise their voice and enter into an informed dialogue about decisions that affect their lives. It is a way of empowering all citizens including vulnerable and excluded people to claim their broader rights and entitlements.
